Don McLean’s original recording of American Pie returned to the UK charts on February 12th, 40 years after its first release. In 1972 the song peaked at number 2; in 1991 it’s official re-release saw it climb into the UK top-10 and in 2000 Madonna’s version reached number 1. The song also charted in the UK top-40 in 1994 with Just Luis’s remix.
5,000 people parading through the streets of Michigan’s second largest city, Grand Rapids, lip synching to Don McLean’s “American Pie.”
This version of “American Pie” is from Don McLean’s 1976 album called “Solo”, still widely available.
The producer, Marina Fonseca, says she had a wonderful time back in the midsts of February 2010 at Don McLean’s home where he discussed his songwriting and gave some beautiful acoustic performances.
The programme forms part of Sky’s Songbook series, which may in due course air in the States and elsewhere.
Don McLean is currently coming to the end of the latest leg of his 2010-11 World Tour having played shows in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and, tomorrow, a most eagerly awaited concert in Manila.
